On offer here is a tall and slender French Louis Philippe mirror, that dates from the mid-to-late 19th century. It showcases the hallmark features of the Louis Philippe period, including the elegantly rounded top corners and refined, understated floral engraving along the upper frame. Emerging during the reign of King Louis-Philippe I (1830–1848), this style epitomizes timeless sophistication, characterized by clean lines, graceful curves, and a focus on subtle luxury. Remaining in vogue well into the 1870s, Louis Philippe mirrors continue to complement both traditional and contemporary interiors with effortless elegance.
This particular frame is finished with authentic silver leaf, meticulously burnished with an agate stone to achieve a soft, luminous metallic sheen. A hand-applied transparent yellow patina gives the piece its signature pale gold appearance, enhanced by the rich, deep glow of the traditional red bole underlayer—an essential mark of masterful gilding craftsmanship.
The mirror was carefully resized in the past, a common 19th-century practice, visible in the slight interruption of the engraved pattern at the bottom corners. It retains its original silver nitrate mirror plate, which has developed charming signs of age, including minor foxing and a few spots in the lower right section—perfectly in line with its authentic antique character.
Professionally cleaned and gently restored in our atelier, the mirror's glass was delicately removed, the frame was softly cleaned, and the original glass securely reinstalled. The piece also retains its original pinewood backing. Solid, clean, and ready to hang, this mirror is not only a functional item but a statement piece, offering the perfect blend of history, craftsmanship, and understated glamour.
