About the Item
This unique gold-gilded French Louis-Philippe mirror was made in 1890.
The frame has a pinewood core that was first smoothed with gesso and then coated with a layer of red clay known as bolus. In this layer, delicate floral engravings were carved before the entire frame was gilded with gold leaf. The engraved details were partially polished, creating a subtle play between matte and glossy gold tones. A fine beaded inner border enhances the refined appearance of the frame. The gilding is exceptionally well preserved and still displays a deep, warm tone — remarkable for a mirror more than 135 years old.
The mirror plate is the original silver-nitrate glass and remains in very good condition, with only a small spot in the lower right corner. On the back of the glass, an atelier stamp with a date confirms its production in 1890.
The Louis-Philippe style, named after the French king who reigned from 1830 to 1848, is characterized by elegant simplicity and refined proportions. Excessive ornamentation gave way to soft lines, rounded upper corners, and subtle decorative elements such as floral engravings and beaded moldings. This mirror perfectly embodies that aesthetic — a harmonious blend of classical restraint and understated luxury.
In our atelier, the back panel and mirror glass were carefully removed, thoroughly cleaned, and reassembled. The mirror is now in excellent condition — clean, solid, and ready for use.
