About the Item
18th Century Chippendale-Period Rococo Mirror, Veneered in Sycamore
A charming mid- to late-18th century Chippendale-period wall mirror, veneered throughout in sycamore (or another closely related pale fruitwood). The timber displays the fine, closed grain and warm honeyed tone associated with well-oxidised Georgian sycamore.
The frame follows a refined provincial interpretation of the Chippendale rococo style, with pierced cresting centred by a circular cartouche, flanking scrolls, and a shaped lower apron. The small scale and veneered construction are characteristic of regional cabinetmaking, offering a lighter and more domestic expression of the popular rococo vocabulary of the period.
Retaining its original 18th-century mercury-backed plate, the mirror shows gentle waviness and attractive light speckling typical of early glass. The gilt inner slip, formed over gesso and bole, displays naturally softened high points from age and handling. The sycamore veneers show light historic repairs, age-related shrinkage, and slight surface undulation consistent with thin fruitwood veneers laid over shaped groundwork.
A scarce small-format Georgian mirror of elegant outline, uncommon timber choice, and considerable decorative charm.
Dimensions (approximate):
Frame: 68.5 × 37.5 cm (27 × 14 3/4 inches)
Visible plate: 39.5 × 24 cm (15 1/2 × 9 1/2 inches)
Condition:
Structurally sound and in good period order.
Original 18th-century mercury plate with gentle waviness and light speckling.
Gilt slip with honest age wear and small losses.
Veneers with minor historic repairs, natural shrinkage lines, and softly undulating surfaces typical of period sycamore or fruitwood veneers.
Original backboards retained, displaying authentic 18th-century oxidisation, hand-tool marks, and well-settled surfaces, confirming the mirror’s integrity.
Cleaned and waxed; ready to hang. As with all genuine Georgian mirrors, subtle signs of age contribute to its charm and character.
