About the Item
An exceptional and rare French Regence period mirror, crafted circa 1715, boasting extraordinary scale, symmetry, and ornamental quality. The elaborately carved giltwood frame is crowned with a finely rendered putto seated on a cloud, joyfully playing a lute, framed by exuberant acanthus scrollwork and two majestic phoenix birds, symbols of rebirth and immortality.
The sides are adorned with rocaille flourishes, floral swags, and openwork carving of the finest execution, leading the eye down to an equally ornate base, where mirrored symmetry and botanical motifs culminate in two more sculpted phoenix figures. The original mercury glass beveled mirror plates remain intact, bearing age-appropriate spotting that enhances the piece's authenticity and allure.
Retaining its superb original water-gilded surface, the mirror glows with a deep, warm patina and displays all the elegance and artistic finesse characteristic of early 18th-century French craftsmanship during the Regence transition from Louis XIV to Louis XV.
A museum-worthy architectural statement mirror, suitable for refined classical interiors or as a dramatic contrast in contemporary spaces.
