About the Item

An extraordinary cushion mirror from 19th century France, the reflection is secondary to the artistry of gilded, repoussé metal decoration cascading from the pediment to surround the glass on every plane. In the crown are high-relief representations of botanical themes and a few military references like flags, arrows, and drums à la Louis XVI tastes. The rectangular mirror at center projects outward from the frame, dazzling with crystals along the bottom edge which calls attention to the hand-cut bevel around the perimeter. Moving outward from the center, a border of the cushioned metal is edged in a ebonized wood molding of reeded texture that is repeated toward the outer border of mirrored panels ornamented with elaborate corners and stations in between. The mirror plates are original, exhibiting varying degrees of foxing and a thin haze of oxidation.
