About the Item
A large neoclassical-style wall mirror, second half of the 20th century, conceived in emulation of late 18th-century French Louis XVI models. The rectangular frame is finished in a warm gilt-ochre tone with a narrow beaded inner border and stepped outer molding. Suspended from the crest is a boldly modeled bow-knot above a circular medallion bearing a profile bust of a classical figure—rendered in darkened, patinated relief as a deliberate archaizing device—flanked by draped laurel swags cascading down the shoulders of the frame.
The glass exhibits a heavy, deliberately mottled “antiqued” surface intended to evoke the atmospheric degradation found on period mercury plates, reinforcing the mirror’s historicizing aesthetic. The construction, visible from the reverse, reflects modern manufacture rather than 18th-century joinery, with contemporary backboards and wire suspension. Despite its later date, the mirror presents a decorative vocabulary firmly aligned with neoclassical taste, its laurel festoons, tied ribbon crest, and heroic profile medallion collectively recalling the ornamental grammar made fashionable in the era of Louis XVI and the early Empire.
