About Louis Sognot (1892–1970)
Louis Sognot was a leading figure in 20th-century French design, celebrated for his innovative use of rattan, bamboo, and modernist forms. Trained at the École Bernard Palissy, Sognot worked early in his career with Maurice Dufrêne at the Galeries Lafayette design studio before developing his own distinctive style.
Throughout the 1930s to the 1950s, he became one of the major contributors to the French modernist movement, known for creating furniture and decorative objects that blended functionality, natural materials, and refined craftsmanship. His collaborations with cabinetmakers, decorators, and the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM) placed him among the most influential designers of the period.
Today, Sognot’s bamboo and rattan pieces—including mirrors, chairs, and storage furniture—are highly sought after on the international market, appreciated for their timeless modernity and sculptural simplicity. This sunburst mirror is a quintessential example of his artistic vision and enduring legacy.
