About the Item
George II carved and painted Palladian mirror in the manner of Abraham Swan, the shell carved crest with scroll and foliate carving, over mercury glass mirror plate with ribbon and flower head carved blocked frame retaining much original putty/stone colored lime paint. English, circa 1745.
Abraham Swan was a noted architect and designer whose career spanned the baroque classical to the rococo eras. A contemporary of William Kent, his designs were considered less ponderous and more graceful than his rival. His design books included "The British Architect," which was very influential in Colonial American design.
