Gérard Hofmann (1917–1965):
French painter and ceramist.
Born in 1917, Gérard Hofmann began his career as a painter before turning to ceramics. In Vallauris, he joined the Cérenne ceramic workshop as a decorator.
Cérenne was founded by Charles René Neveux, its name derived from the contraction of the company name “Céramique René Neveux.” Active between 1949 and 1959, the workshop employed around fifty people, including about twenty decorators, producing both utilitarian ceramics and unique pieces for France and international markets. From 1959, René Grout, assisted by his son Robert, took over the management until the factory closed in 1994.
After 1959, Gérard Hofmann left Cérenne and, together with his wife Christiane, opened his own workshop on Col de Saint Antoine Road in Vallauris. The couple produced both utilitarian ceramics and unique decorative pieces such as rolling vases and mirrors. Their works were sold in the ceramic store “La Bergerie,” founded by Françoise Azais.
A specialist in manganese red glaze, rare color, Gérard Hofmann crafted pieces of exceptional quality and is recognized for his distinctive and powerful red hues.
He also collaborated with the artist Fernand Léger in Biot.
