About the Item
This rare mirror is a large full-length mirror imported to Japan during the Meiji period, which was later reworked and refurbished. It was discovered in an old Japanese home, and the back of the mirror bears a detailed record written by its original owner, conveying the long story of its history.
It appears to have originally been a large full-length mirror brought to Japan across the ocean during the Meiji period, but the back reads that it later fell over and broke, shattering the mirror. Since this mirror was likely rare and expensive even for those of its time, and most importantly, a treasured item for this family, it was likely repaired and repurposed. The usable glass was removed, and a square frame was remade from the remaining wood, transforming it into the small mirror we see today.
The frame is believed to be made of oak, and is finished with a deep, black lacquer-like finish. The gently curving corners reveal traces of handcrafted work, while the paint has worn away from years of use, revealing a subtle hint of the base, adding to the charm of antiques. Additionally, triple lines around the frame create subtle shadows as the light catches them, giving the piece a presence while maintaining a tranquil, refined appearance.
The inscription on the back includes a date of 1951, detailing that the mirror was imported during the Meiji period and how it was restored after being damaged. Antique mirrors with such history written directly on the back are extremely rare, and at a glance, they are fascinating documents that reveal the cherished care of an old Japanese family. This is a special piece that transcends the boundaries of furniture, and where "the history itself is beautiful."
When hung on the wall, it can be displayed as a diamond, adding a stylish accent to any space. If you prefer a square orientation, simply remove and replace the metal fittings on the back, allowing it to be used as a square mirror. The metal fittings and wire on the back remain intact, further demonstrating the piece's high level of originality.
There are small scratches and stains on the mirror surface due to age, and cracks at the corners of the frame are typical of ancient wood, but please understand that these are all testament to the mirror's history. Rather, they are enjoyed as a way to deeply appreciate its antique charm.
Its compact size makes it easy to incorporate into modern living spaces, and it is an extremely useful piece to use as an accent in an entryway, a small corner, or on a display shelf. This mirror, which has been passed down for over 100 years, will now add a beautiful touch to a new space.
This one-of-a-kind antique mirror can be enjoyed even with the history written on the back. It is a special piece that will never be re-obtained. Don't miss your chance to own it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are a specialized team dealing in antiques and vintage items, comprised of stores based on three distinct brands. While focusing on Japanese items, we also offer a carefully curated selection of attractive goods from around the world—each evoking the culture and history of its country of origin.
Unlike the traditional Japanese antique furniture and art that have been appreciated overseas until now, we shine a light on the tools and furniture that were used for many years in ordinary Japanese homes and farmhouses. These objects have gained a unique charm over time, their beauty deepened by the history accumulated through daily life. In today’s world, however, many of these precious items are discarded during home demolitions. We are committed to reassessing their value and passing them on to future generations.
Drawing from our extensive experience—having seen tens of thousands of items through direct purchases, markets, and auction houses—we carefully select and present only the most captivating pieces. This is something made possible only through the years of knowledge and expertise we have cultivated.
Rather than focusing on the widely known facets of Japanese art and culture, we highlight the subtle beauty born from the everyday life of common people. It is this rediscovered beauty, steeped in history, that we strive to share with the world.
