A monumental late 19th century Italian Rococo floor mirror, richly carved in giltwood and crowned with an elegant classical grisaille medallion. The original mercury mirror plate, the refined lattice carving and the warm patina of the gilding give this piece a rare presence. A true statement piece for sophisticated interiors. This exceptional Italian floor mirror dates from the late 19th century and captures the full elegance of the Rococo revival. Monumental in scale and refined in its execution, it was almost certainly created for an aristocratic home or a private palazzo. Its craftsmanship reflects the traditions of the major Italian carving ateliers in Florence and Rome during the period around 1880 to 1900. The frame is carved in solid wood and finished with original water gilding. The surface shows the soft depth and warm tone that only true period gilding can offer. Its natural patina and gentle wear are consistent with age and give the mirror an authentic presence that collectors appreciate. The upper section is crowned with a circular grisaille medallion, depicting a classical mythological scene. This type of monochrome relief painting, inspired by ancient Roman stucco and Renaissance decorative arts, was highly prized in Italy during the 19th century. The medallion adds both artistic value and a sense of quiet nobility. Along the sides and lower section, the frame is enriched with open lattice carving, scrolls and foliate details. The carving is crisp and elegant, a clear sign of a skilled hand and of the sophisticated Rococo taste that defined Italian interiors during this revival period. The mirror plate is original and retains its mercury backing. Subtle oxidation, characteristic silvering and faint lines are entirely normal for 19th century mercury glass and serve as a testament to its age. This natural aging effect contributes greatly to its charm and authenticity. Large antique mirrors of this scale, especially with original plates and grisaille decoration, are increasingly difficult to find. This piece adds height, light and a sense of refined luxury to any room. It is ideal for grand entry halls, dressing rooms, boutique interiors and high end residential projects.
