An Extremely Attractive 19th Century Florentine Design Italian Giltwood Wall Mirror, Having Superb Carved Frame With Central Shells, Intertwined Floral Trails And Giglio Corners, All Enclosing Rectangular Old Bevelled Mirror Plate With Replacement Back.
A fabulous mid 19th century Florentine giltwood wall mirror is the perfect size to fill a whole variety of different size spaces and settings around the home and comes with an incredibly elegant carved frame.
All things considered it is in excellent condition, with just a few old repairs and of course the expected scuffs and scrapes. More often than not however mirrors of this design have been left battered and bruised with many, many repairs and missing pieces so in our opinion its great to find one that has clearly been as well loved as this.
The mirror plate itself is old, but probablu not original mid 19th century as the condition is a little too good for that, despite various old marks and ageing. There is also a possibility that the carved frame itself started life designed to hold a painting, only to be relatively quickly converted into the attractive wall mirror which we find today, as that is extremely common for mirrors of this design.
We also really like the apparent giglio carved decoration in the corners, which of course is a symbol of wonderful Florence where we believe this mirror may well have originated from.
It’s also worth noting that the mirror is designed in such a way that it will happily hang portrait or landscape, which of course significantly enhances the available functionality of this piece.
