About the Item
This is an old Japanese mirror, a piece in which a timeless sense of beauty is quietly distilled within its calm and composed presence. Though originally created as a utilitarian object, it now possesses the strong presence of an art piece, transcending its original purpose through the passage of time.
The mirror is believed to date from the Meiji to Taishō period (1860s–1920s), an era when Japan actively absorbed Western culture and reinterpreted it through its own sensibilities. This historical atmosphere can be felt throughout the piece. The design avoids excessive ornamentation, yet retains a refined dignity, reflecting the high aesthetic sensibility of the craftsmen of the time.
The wooden frame is decorated with plaster relief, and the border features a continuous acanthus motif. The acanthus has long been used in Western decorative arts and is traditionally associated with meanings such as immortality, eternal life, and rebirth. This symbolism resonates quietly with the fact that this mirror has endured and survived across generations.
The mirror glass itself remains original. Clouding and stains are visible across the surface. While replacing the glass with a new mirror would be easy if clarity were the priority, I have intentionally chosen not to do so. The surface that has emerged over more than a century feels less like deterioration and more like an abstract painting created by chance and time. Depending on the light and viewing angle, the mirror reveals different expressions, adding a subtle depth and quiet atmosphere to the surrounding space.
This piece may not appeal to those seeking perfection, but it is highly recommended for those who appreciate the value of antiques and can embrace the traces left by time as beauty itself. As a mirror that embodies the spirit of wabi-sabi, it will bring a lingering depth and quiet resonance to a contemporary interior.
