About the Item
A Large and Rare Federal Carved Giltwood and Eglomise Overmantel Mirror. Mirror is flanked by double gilded columns on each side, with mirrored inserts that enhance the sense of depth and light. Frame is carved with delicate gilt foliate and ribbon motif. Center front top features a rectangular ebonized and gilded eglomise (reverse-painted glass) panel with gilt ribbons and swags of foliate design. During the Federal period, mirrors like this were central decorative elements in refined American homes, often hung above fireplaces to reflect candlelight and add grandeur to the parlor.
In today's interiors, the overmantel mirror brings timeless elegance to both traditional and contemporary settings. As originally intended, this mirror is ideal above a fireplace, yet also can enhance light and spatial depth in an entryway or dining room. The black eglomise panel contrasts beautifully with minimalist walls or marble surfaces, blending antique craftsmanship with sleek contemporary decor.
