This is a large wall mirror by Meubelfabriek Oisterwijk in leached solid oak.
A very modest yet elegant design, this mirror by Meubelfabriek Oisterwijk resembles works by the French designer duo Guillerme et Chambron - which as it turns out can be said about the whole production of Meubelfabriek Oisterwijk.
The notorious factory produced a wide range of furniture from the 1960s onwards, including chairs, tables, and cabinets. All in solid leached oak. They show robust frames and intricate joinery - showcasing the wood’s natural beauty - and are characterized by elegantly carved details and thoughtful proportions. A production firmly rooted in tradition yet also undeniably modern.
During its heydays everyone in The Netherlands was aware of Meubelfabriek Oisterwijk, making the name of the town Oisterwijk almost a synonym for the furniture itself. The company had several large Dutch showrooms and was running popular ads both in newspapers and television.
The factory was a significant employer in the region, fostering a strong sense of community among its workers. Many employees spent their entire careers at the factory, passing down their skills and knowledge to subsequent generations. In the latter part of the 20th century, Meubelfabriek Oisterwijk faced challenges from mass production and globalization and eventually closed down.
This particular mirror comes from the house of a former employee of Meubelfabriek Oisterwijk and probably also was made by him personally.
It comes in a good condition with a slight haze and some wear in the mirror glass itself.
