About the Item
PAIR OF FRENCH NEOCLASSICAL GILTWOOD WEDDING MIRRORS
Probably Paris, circa 1850-70
With sculpted birds at play in crest and bold bevelled mirrored borders
50 3/4" H x 35 1/4" W x 6 1/2" D [approx.]
ref. 510VLW01E
A closely matched pair of Neoclassical giltwood mirrors that have been thoughtfully conceived as pendants and carved with refined allegorical ornament. Each surmounted by a sculptural crest of birds at play, animated and naturalistically rendered, together with a criss-crossing central cornucopia and a full quiver of arrows. The imagery is traditionally associated with union, fertility and concord, suggesting an intended function as wedding or marriage mirrors.
The frames are carved throughout with restrained classical moldings, including beaded and twisted inner borders framing bold beveled mirror plates. The carving remains supple rather than academic, with softly modeled foliage and gently relaxed symmetry characteristic of mid-19th century French Neoclassicism rather than strict Louis XVI precedent. The gilding appears to be water gilt, with areas of burnish and matte contrast preserved beneath later surface wear, the result being a fabulous depth and tonality in the the surfaces.
Condition: Fine original condition. All glass replaced during the 20th century. Various losses to the backboards, these original but re-secured with modern pins. Natural rubbing and wear to the gilding, most of which is entirely original and presents brilliantly. Light separations and cracks from shrinkage over time. Some re-carved missing elements: one leaf, bottom of the quiver in a crest, the upper right and left spandrels have restored losses where they meet the egg-and-dart border, other wear/losses/minor restorations. An exquisite presentation - ready to place. ** Note, the mirrors are heavy and the wiring should be inspected by a professional and proper anchoring should be considered prior to placement.
