About the Item
The Portals are a collection of wall mounted ceramic pieces, either illuminated or reflective. The irregular and highly textured objects evoke bleached coral, lava scars or even barnacles. The collection includes the four first versions of an ongoing series. Either emitting a warm and gradient glow, or reflecting the external, the works are both sculptural and ghostlike. Portals can be combined into sets that resemble groupings of family portraits, alone as curiosities, or used as you would any kind of sconce.

Simon Johns
Simon Johns is a Canadian fine arts-trained designer working out of the woods in southern Quebec. He approaches design with hands-on studio experiments closer to sculpture than to design. His work draws from relations between the manufactured product and the raw surroundings of the studio's wooded location. His work has been shown at Sight Unseen Offsite for NY Design Week in 2016 and 2017, at Wanted Design Manhattan 2016 and 2017, and at the Toronto Design Offsite (TODO) 2017 and 2018.
