About the Item

Rare and unusual Art Nouveau Arts and Crafts period figured oak and parcel gilt aquatic motifs wall mirror Circa 1890 Provenance: Estate of a Zigfield Follies, Broadway NYC actress This enchanting mirror combines stylized Art Nouveau sea shell, scallop, sea moss, foliate and scroll design elements with bold Arts and Crafts richly figured oak shaped pilasters to a striking effect. Interesting Art Nouveau oak and parcel gilt mirrors are scarce and we were delighted to discover this wonderful example in a historic Upper West Side NYC brownstone. The building belonged to a noted actress who started her career as a Zigfield Follies showgirl, going on to perform in numerous Broadway productions. The aquatic motifs of this mirror are parcel gilt and hand painted in attractive tones of greenish-gold and silvery-grey. The hand hewn oak pilasters retain their beautiful original finish and have been lightly polished with museum wax. A fabulous find for someone seeking bold, singular, striking design.
