About the Item

This rare and highly decorative Scandinavian Modern wall-hung mirror was designed by Mogens Lund and retailed by the prestigious Illums Bolighus in Copenhagen during the 1960s. The piece exemplifies the period’s refined balance between modern design, artisanal craftsmanship, and expressive materiality. The oval mirror is framed by a band of hand-glazed ceramic tiles, each individually set to form a continuous, sculptural surround. The tiles feature a warm ochre ground with deep green and black abstract glaze patterns, creating a rhythmic, almost organic motif around the mirror. A fine craquelure in the glaze adds depth and texture, emphasizing the handcrafted nature of the piece and lending it a rich, tactile surface. The bold contrast between the graphic ceramic frame and the softly reflective mirror surface results in a striking visual presence, equally suited to modern, eclectic, or classic interiors. The design reflects Mogens Lund’s interest in ceramics as an architectural and decorative medium, while Illums Bolighus’s involvement underscores the mirror’s high quality and design pedigree. A rare surviving example, this mirror stands as both a functional object and a sculptural wall piece, representative of Danish modernism’s more expressive and decorative direction in the 1960s.
