About the Item
A dramatic and theatrical late 19th Century carved and gilt frame, made in Glasgow, Scotland by picture framers Menzies
Son according to the original label affixed to the back. Note the original painting has been replaced by new mirror glass. This amazing frame, at first glance, appears to be inspired by French rococo, with thick, scrolling foliate and shell motifs wrapping the edges against a reticulated background that plays on a sense of depth and texture. The artistry in this piece is reflective of a flourishing creative environment during the period known as the Glasgow School, a regional style parallel to Art Nouveau. Displayed in vertical orientation, the frame is symmetrical to hang in either direction. Mirror plate is a more recent addition. Please view the detailed images to see more of this incredible mirror.
