About the Item

Antique Tramp Art Chip Carved Mirror Frame, Dated 1910, having a carved and pierced arched top above a rectangular surround, fashioned with multi-layered diamonds and bull's eyes, in light varnished finish. The mis-named "Tramp Art" was for the most part actually made by talented craftsmen, often of German descent and well-known in their communities. typically hand crafted from scrap wood or cigar boxes in the manner called "chip carved", but in reality comprising stacked layers of sheets hand cut with triangular dentition. The craft flourished in the 1920s when wooden cigar boxes appeared on the scene, providing a ready source of very thin cut wood. This dated example is thus extremely early - a wedding present with the couple's initials and date "1910." The frame remains in great condition, mounted with new mirrored glass.
