About the Item
Venetian mirror from the second half of the 19th century, entirely hand-carved, polychromatically lacquered and gilded with gouache. The frame is a veritable masterpiece of craftsmanship, with a decoration that simulates openwork lace, where carved leaves-animated by continuous movement-weave and chase each other along the outline. The surface shows warm, mellow tones, likely obtained with pigments and animal glues according to traditional recipes. The hues range between a delicate light blue, an earthy pink and golden touches. The work probably originated as a frame for a painting and only later was it fitted with a mirror. The frame has no set direction, so it can be used either vertically or horizontally, or employed again as a frame for a canvas. The frame is in good state of preservation, with a few small misses and a slightly ragged corner.
