About the Item
An antique carved and gilded wood canopy of crown (corona) form . Nice old gold or gilt patina ,reflecting years of age probably in oil or coal heated boudoirs. Original purpose was to preside over a bed below with draperies flowing downwards. In this more modern era , use as a garniture on a chest, over a window or door , in the bathroom , over a painting or yes even over a bed.
Years of dirt , grime and general wear are apparent (review photos ) throughout as well as typical losses to the gilding See item description as well as signs of old pest infestation.
The corona evolved from the canopy bed which were used in medieval times by the well-to-do to keep the cold drafts at bay in poorly heated bed chambers .
A bed corona, also called Lit à Couronne in French, is suspended at the head of the bed (like a crown on a head) with drapery extending down to the sides of the edge of the bed. The crown motif suggest royalty or more often a significant personage .Giltwood being an additional expense or extravagance .
