About the Item
Pair of Art Deco Burlwood Twin Bed Frames on Mahogany Bases, c. 1930s
Description:
A striking and sculptural pair of Art Deco twin bed frames, crafted circa 1930s, featuring beautifully figured burlwood veneer panels and resting on subtly flared mahogany bases. Each bed is composed of a rectangular headboard, footboard, and side rails with rich natural patterning throughout the burl surfaces. The warm amber tone of the burlwood is complemented by the darker stained mahogany plinths, which provide a bold visual foundation and subtle contrast.
These streamlined forms reflect the period’s embrace of luxurious materials and minimalist geometric structure, typical of the Art Deco style as interpreted in both European and American interiors. Unmarked, but consistent with quality production of the era.
Dimensions (each bed):
36 in. high x 81 in. long x 43 in. wide
Condition:
Good overall condition. Minor edge wear and some cracking/lifting to the veneer consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and visually clean. Ready to place.
Provenance:
Property from the Collection of a Media Executive
Style Notes:
These beds are excellent examples of 1930s Art Deco design, showcasing the movement’s preference for exotic veneers, symmetry, and clean architectural lines. They would work beautifully in a minimalist, modernist, or eclectic bedroom setting, especially when paired with rich textiles or Deco lighting.
Probable Origin:
United States (East Coast or Midwest), c. 1930s
Supporting Evidence:
The burl veneer and mahogany base combination was popular among American furniture makers who catered to clients seeking the opulence of French Art Deco but at a more accessible domestic scale.
The construction methods (notably the use of strong mortise-and-tenon joinery and interior hardware) suggest professional cabinetry, consistent with output from fine furniture manufacturers in cities like Grand Rapids, MI, or New York.
Unmarked but professionally made: Many high-end American pieces of this era were made for department stores or decorators and often left unbranded, particularly custom orders.
