A fine late 18th Century large Dutch four-poster bed with exceptional posts and ealy 19th century Italian carved giltwood swans. The posts with well carved elements: neoclassical urns, capitals, carved turnings and vase sections; their most attractive part is the boxwood and mahogany lined inlay which we haven't seen on English 18th beds. In addition, unusally, the rails are designed to be seen and made in mahogany and framed with carved and plain astragal beads. Good sturdy construction, fixed together with steel bolts and will dismantle for shipping. Needs new drapery hangings and the white fabric around the end posts & headboard should be cleaned or replaced. For the new mattress, we would recommend a box spring mattress with a well (height is saved with part of the box mattress fitting between the rails) and a second mattress on top.
