King Size 4-Poster Sheraton Bed with Carved Posts, Phyfe School, c. 1815

About the Item

A fine Federal mahogany bed influenced by Sheraton and Regency styles, attributable to the workshop of Duncan Phyfe, circa 1810-1818. The original bed was adapted in our workshop to fit a king size mattress box-spring by making a new headboard, using the original headboard as a pattern, and by replacing the short rails to increase the width. The original smaller bed is intact, including the original headboard and side rails. This bed in its exact form can be found in Furniture Masterpieces of Duncan Phyfe by Charles Cornelius published in 1922 on page 52 illustrating four post styles available from the Phyfe workshop in the early 1800's. From the foot to the top of the post where the carved acanthus leaves meet the fluted end cap, the bed is original and faithful to the Phyfe design. The fluted end cap and finials were added. The original design terminated with the linear acanthus carvings at the top of the post gracefully transitioning into a long tapered turning without a finial. This bed is most likely from the Phyfe workshop, its age and execution would suggest that this is a possibility. Original bed bolts pull the bed together, regardless of configuration, make a tight mechanical connection; there is no wobble or squeaking. Comes with original carved, wooden bed bolt covers. We also made a simple tester for the king bed, which may or may not be used depending on customer's taste needs. Refer to photos for all the options. Buyer receives all of the following components, allowing bed to assemble in three different ways: King bed with tester (Images 1 3) King bed without tester (Images 2 4) Original bed with original headboard rails (Images 16-20) Outside measurements for King: 83 1/2" wide x 87 1/4" long x 98 1/4" high with tester and finials From floor to top of headboard: 50" From floor to top of angle that holds the box spring: 11 1/4" Bed can be assembled and used in its original configuration: Original is an Extra-long, full-size inside the rails: 56" wide x 79" long or a queen outside the rails: 58 1/2" wide x 79" long (requires a custom box with a queen mattress).

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Side rails were altered a while ago, the original side rails were higher wider. Fluted end cap on the upper post and finials were added, probably in the late 1800 s to update or modernize the style to a more contemporary look.
