Kipp Stewart, a celebrated American designer, born in 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania did not lead a charmed childhood. Sent to California to live with distant relatives at a young age, you could call him a self-made man. His furniture designing fate was sealed at 15 when hitchhiking to school he passed a storefront shop and studio on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles with pencil industrial drawings in the windows and fell in love with them. Kipp worked hard, turning down a track and field scholarship at USC and instead enrolled at Chouinard Art Institute in the late 1940s. Again, he worked very hard days and nights becoming a renowned artist, architect, and award-winning designer. He currently resides in Carmel, California and is still painting. Alexander Stewart Orton MacDougall was born in the late 1920s in Pasadena and grew up in a Green and Green house which he credits for his fascination and love of design. Judged early with a learning disability which he obviously overcame, Stewart attended Chouinard Art Institute after a short time in the Navy. He then went to work for Victor Gruen and Associates where he met his mentor Rudolf Baumfeld who had studied under Le Courbusier. With this association, his design and artistry paths were sealed. Striving always for simple lines without fussiness. It is clearly apparent throughout his work whether in furniture, boats, golf clubs, or sculpture. He currently splits his time between Montecito California, and Nantucket with his wife of many many years and lifetime muse, still working on projects each day. Drexel Furniture Company was founded in 1903 in Drexel, North Carolina by six businessmen for a total investment of $14,000.00. Sam Huffman, one of the initial founders, managed the enterprise until his death in 1935 when his son, Robert O. Huffman took the helm. By 1950 under the younger Huffman’s leadership Drexel had grown from a small factory to a leader in furniture manufacturing. They acquired other furniture companies along the way and by the late 1950s employed 2300 workers. The 1960s had them adding industrial and hospitality furniture to their lines. In 1968 they were purchased again, and Drexel Enterprises became Drexel Heritage Furnishings, Inc. They continued to add to their styles and lines and were sold again and then in 1986 became part of Masco Corporation one of the country’s largest furniture manufacturers. They are now based in High Point, NC and operate ten factories in North Carolina and one in South Carolina and are one of the leading furniture manufacturers in the world. 1971 MCM Lane Headboard Tower Suite Collection Full/Queen Bed Rosewood Walnut
By Lane Furniture
Located in Topeka, KS
Marvelous vintage Mid-Century Modern headboard Lane Furniture Tower Suite Collection comprised of walnut and rosewood. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been restored or refinished. Please see photos and zoom in for details as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 10-18-1971. Sometimes the best thing to do first thing in the morning is go right back to bed! And honestly, with a bed this beautiful, you may never want to get up!!! This is an INCREDIBLE full or queen sized “Tower Suite Collection” headboard by Lane Furniture!! It bears a lovely contrast of a walnut frame and fabulous decorative rosewood inlays across the front and both sides. This is a classic beauty with a Mid-Century Modern style that you are sure to love for years to come. It is going to be gorgeous in your bedroom! All you need is a full or queen-sized mattress and a Hollywood frame OR if you don’t mind the opinion of my mom, who is an EXCEPTIONAL retired interior designer… She would have a hanging mechanism or wall cleat made so that you can attach it to the wall and lift it a little higher, use a platform rather than a Hollywood frame, and toss out the box springs as mattresses today are much taller than they used to be. Annnnnd, Voila! Maximum exposure of the headboard! If that sounds like something you would be interested in, we would be happy to provide a wall cleat upon purchase of the headboard. This is a gorgeous example of high-quality craftsmanship constructed with exquisite woods and attention to detail quintessential of Lane Furniture. You simply can’t go wrong! Lane was founded in 1912 by Edward Hudson Lane at the age of 21, upon his father’s suggestion after he, John Edward Lane, bought a small packing-box plant in Altavista, Virginia. Edward procured a loan and converted the factory to make cedar chests and named it The Standard Red Cedar Chest Co. Sales were good and the company expanded. But during WWI, with the banning of rail freight deemed non-essential, they began making pine ammunition boxes. This is notable as it led to an assembly line which was revolutionary and became the first moving conveyor assembly system in the furniture industry. After the war, with sales still increasing, Ed Lane decided he could risk giving the company his name and changed it to The Lane Co...

We will include metal siderails upon purchase. This is a classic beauty with an Art Moderne style that you are sure to love for years to come. It is designed in a style after Russel Wright for Conant Ball or Bissman. My mother (who is a retired interior designer and has been identifying vintage pieces since before I was born… and I am vintage myself!!) believes the actual style is a copy after Russel Wright but the construction leads her to believe it’s Bissman. It is not marked, but no matter, it is INCREDIBLE!! The design world calls these transition pieces… of the era when pieces transitioned between the Art Deco period and the Mid-Century Modern period, during the early portion of the 20th century. Ahhhhh, the good ‘ol days!! LOVE IT!!! The maple bears a beautiful natural shade and it features clean lines, a timeless presence, and simple design sure to blend in beautifully with any décor. We think it would be fabulous utilized in a children’s bedroom but it would also be wonderful in a college dorm, guest room, or an industrial loft apartment! Spectacular in its simplicity, this is exactly the twin bed set...
