About the Item

The Vanessa bed, designed by renowned Italian architect and designer Tobia Scarpa around 1959 and originally produced for Gavina (and later by Simon by Cassina), is an icon of Italian modernist design from the 1950s and 1960s. This bed represents a perfect balance between minimalism, functionality, and aesthetic refinement, with an approach that blends industrial elements with domestic comfort, typical of Scarpa's poetics, influenced by his father, Carlo Scarpa. The bed appears as a raised platform on slender, oblique legs, lending a sense of lightness and suspension in space. The frame is made of black lacquered metal. The design can be disassembled, facilitating transport, and stands out for its versatility: an "antidote to the bulky awkwardness of modern beds," as described in some historical sources, with a compact footprint and an airy aesthetic that makes it ideal for contemporary or minimalist spaces. Created during the Italian economic boom, the Vanessa embodies the spirit of Midcentury Modern: clean lines, an innovative use of metal as a "poor" material elevated to luxury, and a focus on ergonomics that Scarpa derived from his architectural training. It has been exhibited in museums such as the MoMA in New York and the Victoria Albert Museum in London, and remains a collector's item. Ask us for more information or to receive a shipping quote.
