This imposing Napoleon III bed in walnut was crafted in the latter half of the 19th century
The bed’s gadrooned frame is adorned at the foot with a shell motif surrounded by foliage, from which a pendant rests upon a gadrooned leaf. The two front legs are intricately carved with chimeras: two roaring lionesses, featuring feminine chests and wings, resting on singular lion paws. The back legs are turned and gadrooned. The headboard features three molded panels framed by two columns entwined with spiraling ivy leaves. The upper section is adorned with draped garlands, centered by shells and leafy motifs, all topped with an architectural cornice. This cornice supports a wealth of volutes and acanthus scrolls that frame a central cartouche, sculpted with wildflowers tied by a ribbon, flanked by two flame-topped urns adorned with leaves.
The bed’s eclectic ornamentation, merging classical motifs with decorative abundance, is a quintessential example of the Napoleon III style.
