About the Item

Franco Campo (1926) and Carlo Graffi (1925-1985) were an Italian design duo. After meeting in Turin, Italy, in 1950, they started their own furniture company, called “Home” in 1956. Influenced by Carlo Mollino, Graffi’s former mentor, their style became more rigid and sculptural, emphasising the construction of their forms. After the “Home” factory burned down in 1964, Graffi went back to working with Mollino and Campo continued to work as an independent designer, but their collaboration left a long-lasting legacy. This daybed showcases the work of the iconic duo, while reflecting the design ethos of its period. In Italy the desire for functionalism went hand in hand with understatement, refinement, and elegance for much of the mid-century era. As a result, this piece combines balanced proportions and composition with subtle playfulness, coming together in a timeless manner. The focus is divided equally between the solid wood base and the fully upholstered mattress. The bed is visually set apart by its black stripes, present on both the structure and the fabric. The horizontal metal bars forming the head-board, as well as the foot-board, together with the vertical lines of the upholstery define the piece and offer it a sophisticated charm. This daybed manages to offer a sturdy, durable addition to a room, thanks to the expertly crafted frame resting on four tapered legs, while maintaining the modernity and uniqueness so sought after today. Campo and Graffi’s work, like this piece reminds us of the great fusion between mid-century European craftsmanship and distinct Italian Modern design aesthetics, making for ideal furniture element in any contemporary living spaces.
