About the Item
This elegant pair of antique French chests was crafted circa 1880 and reflects the refined curves and restrained ornamentation associated with Louis XV inspired provincial furniture. Each chest is built of solid wood and fitted with two generously sized drawers, making them ideal for use as bedside tables, small commodes, or accent chests in a bedroom, living space, or entry.
The shaped serpentine fronts are outlined with delicately carved and painted faux paneling, accented by original metal solid brass drawer pulls and escutcheons. The cases rest on slender tapered legs, enhancing their light, graceful silhouette. Both chests retain their original painted finish in a soft blue gray palette with intentionally distressed wear, revealing subtle layers beneath and contributing to their authentic antique character and decorative appeal. The shaped tops echo the curvilinear form of the drawers below, while the sides feature painted cartouche motifs for added visual interest.
The pair is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with some wear and patina consistent with over a century of history. The backs show honest construction and age, further underscoring their authenticity. Exquisitely hand-crafted in France in the late 18th / early 19th century, exceptionally executed in elegant, sophisticated and luxurious King Louis 15th taste, topped with the original rouge red Pyrenees marble top with striking white veining, serpentine-shaped front and molded edge, over a conforming solid wood case fitted with a secret hidden storage compartment and four dovetailed drawers, each with ornate gilt-bronze handles and escutcheons. When you remove the top left drawer, the center panel with faux escutcheon can slide over and reveal a concealed wooden drawer for valuables.
Elegantly decorated, the drawer fronts and rounded corner posts adorned with subtle carvings, paneled sides, scalloped apron with hand carved Rocaille shell and scroll motif, rising on short cabriole legs. In the original cream paint finish with distressed chippy paint patina perfection!
