About the Item
Pair of octagonal column cabinets
Central German
Walnut, gilded lead casting
around 1800
Dimensions: H x D = 89 x 40 cm
Description:
Above an octagonal, two-tiered base, pilasters with gilded bases and capitals support pointed arches, above which a circumferential profile surrounds the top panels of the two column cabinets. Two of each of the eight carcase surfaces are designed as doors that can be opened using a push mechanism.
The soaring surfaces between the filigree pilasters and pointed arches are inspired by the architecture of Gothic church interiors. The calmer veneer of the surfaces in comparison to the lively burl veneer of the plinth, pilasters and cover panels reinforces this impression.
By the end of the 18th century, neo-Gothic style elements had already become established in European furniture art. North of the Alps, the furnishings of the founding building of German classicism, Wörlitz Palace, completed in 1773 and built by Leopold III Friedrich Franz, Prince and Duke of Anhalt-Dessau, provide the earliest examples of this fashion (see Andreas Büttner, Möbel für das Gartenreich Wörlitz).
Due to the strictly classicist design, construction and workmanship of the column cabinets, they can be dated to around 1800. They are a fine example of the spirit of early Romanticism, in which Gothic architecture symbolised the longing for a past, supposedly better world.
