This exquisite pair of Louis XV style nightstands dates from the late 19th century, circa 1880. Crafted with remarkable attention to detail, these pieces feature elegant cabriole legs, floral marquetry tops, and a stunning book-matched veneer pattern on the sides and drawer fronts.
Each stand is veneered in what appears to be a fine combination of walnut, with delicate inlays in various fruitwoods creating soft floral motifs on the top surface. The craftsmanship reflects the enduring influence of 18th-century French furniture design, with a charming twist: one of the cabinets includes a faux book front concealing a small cupboard, evoking the secret compartments found in gentleman’s libraries.
This trompe-l’œil detail is composed of real leather book spines, cleverly mounted on double doors that open to a hidden storage space. The other stand features three drawers, offering practical use alongside visual charm.
