British Household Cavalry Boots
About the Item
Jack boots were first designed in 1812 and are so called because the leather was ‘jacked’ or stiffened to protect against sword blows . Similarly, the wings on these high boots were designed to protect a rider's knee-joint from a sword blow. Jack boots for the Household Cavalry are worn for marching as well as riding and were made specifically for the Royal Life Guards and Royal Horse Guards. At one time every trooper had his boots made to measure. But by 1953 four standard sizes were made, which fit most of the men. A pair adds more than 7 pounds to a man’s weight.
Today, every pair of jackboots can take up to 50 hours to prepare for a parade. They are waxed with beeswax and a blow torch is used to force the wax into the boot to harden them, then layers of polish, spit and water are applied to get the mirror-shine.
