About the Item
An exceptionally scarce example of a Renaissance burgonet, originated most likely in Italy and dating to circa 1540. The skull is forged in one piece and surmounted by three low combs finely decorated with rope-twist detailing. The bowl is pierced at regular intervals, suggesting it was once fitted with a rich textile covering. The visor and neck-guard are gracefully turned up.
Triple-combed burgonets of this type were famously worn by the personal escort of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (reigned 1519–1556). Contemporary accounts describe these helmets covered in burgundy velvet, carefully sewn over the skull and ear pieces, further emphasising their ceremonial and elite status.
This remarkable piece represents not only a rare survival of 16th-century Italian armour craftsmanship but also a direct connection to the pageantry and martial splendour of the Habsburg court.

The helmet is a finely made European bascinet, the classic combat helmet of the era. It features a gracefully pointed visor and hinged cheek plates, designed to provide both excellent facial protection and freedom of movement, while allowing sufficient ventilation and audibility during combat. The bascinet retains its original character and displays the subtle fluted detailing that became a hallmark of German armour-making in the transitional phase from the Gothic to the early Renaissance styles.
