About the Item
An extraordinary pair of medieval pole arms from the 15th-16th century, originating in the Habsburg Empire (Austria).
These rare weapons- comprising a long iron spear and a glaive- were designed for infantry combat and close encounters against both soldiers and cavalry.
The spear features a long wooden shaft reinforced with iron spikes, providing both grip and additional offensive capability, surmounted by a sharply pointed iron head. The glaive, equally formidable, is mounted on a richly decorated wooden shaft, embellished with bronze ornaments and the double-headed eagle of the Habsburg dynasty, a symbol of imperial power during this period. Its blade is equipped with deadly side hooks, engineered for pulling down soldiers and unhorsing opponents in the heat of battle.
The survival of such pole arms with decorated shafts and imperial insignia is exceedingly rare. Most examples lost their original wooden elements centuries ago, making this set an exceptional testament to the artistry and functionality of medieval weaponry.
Collectors and institutions will recognize in these weapons not only their martial purpose but also their symbolic significance as artifacts of Habsburg military history.
