Early Muromachi period Japanese Samurai “Naoe Shizu Katana” (sword). The Muromachi Period in Japanese history ran approximately from 1336 to 1573. HISTORY: In the Kamakura period (1185-1333), Kaneuji a great swordsmith of the famous school of Tegai went to Mino to become a desciple of Masamune, the greatest blacksmith of all time (Soshu school). In time, he will create the 5th school of the five sword schools (Gokaden) of medieval Japan, the famous Mino School. He is one of the greatest names in the history of the sword. The blacksmiths trained by Kaneuji settled in Naoe and founded the Naoe Shizu School. The present sword originated with this school. Two authentication documents accompany the sword: 1) NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai) which stands for the “Preservation of the Japan Art Sword”. It was founded in February 1948 as an authorized foundation by the government in order to save the Japanese sword from an “extinction” that was being caused by the Occupation Forces who tried to confiscate all Japanese swords from the Japanese people just after World War II. The official document for this sword is a “Tokubetsu Kicho Token” (Especially Precious), which started being issued from 1950. This one is dated July 28, 1968. 2) JASMK (Japan Art Sword Museum of Kurashiki) was founded in 1968 and is dedicated to displaying Japanese swords as works of art. It aims to preserve important swords and samurai artifacts, documenting the roughly 1000 years of Japanese swords and their history. This document was issued on December 8, 2015. Has a decent polish, minor surface scratches and oxidation. DIMENSIONS: Length: 38.38 in. (97.4 cm.) Blade length: 28.13 in. (71.3 cm.) Curvature: 0.25 in. (0.7 cm.) Blade width: 1 in. (2.54 cm.) NOTE: The stand is a modern day reproduction and comes with the sword.
