About the Item

An exceptional early German crossbow dating to around 1540, crafted from antler, wood, and iron. This finely made piece exemplifies the late Gothic to early Renaissance period of German arms manufacture. The crossbow retains all of its original components, with no restorations or replacements- a rare survival from the 16th century. The stock is made of wood with antler inlays and mounts, and the iron bow and stirrup display beautifully aged patina consistent with its age. The string appears original or early, showing authentic wear. Despite its age, the piece remains in good condition, showing only minor, expected signs of time. The craftsmanship reflects both functional design and aesthetic refinement typical of mid-16th-century German armories. Origin: Germany Date: circa 1540 Materials: Antler, Wood, Iron Condition: Good for its age; all original, no restorations Period: Gothic / Early Renaissance Provenance: Private Collection, Austria This crossbow represents a remarkable and well-preserved example of early European weaponry- both a historical artifact and a collector’s showpiece.
