About the Item
This rare antique Kukukuku (pronounced "cookah-cookah") war club originates from the Morobe Province, which is a very remote area located within the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea.
The hand carved disc-shaped head is fashioned from a flecked dark green stone millions of years old, honed to a fine edge and then bound with rattan fibres to a hardwood handle terminating to a phallic shaped finial.
The dimensions noted are those measured as illustrated.
PROVENANCE: Purchased by direct descent from the family of Dr. George P. Holland, noted Entomologist and former Director of The Entomology Research Institute at the Canadian Department of Agriculture.
Dr. Holland obtained this and other indigenous artefacts while on a 5 month scientific research expedition to Papua New Guinea in 1957.
In 1967 Dr. Holland was awarded the distinction of Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
