About the Item

Scale model of the Dornier Do X seaplane named I- REDI "Umberto Maddalena" one of the two examples built for L'Italia, made in the early 1930s of walnut wood, wood and metal base not coeval. Bon état. Measurements 60x65x46 cm - 23.5x25.6x18 inches. It was registered under the company SANA (Società Anonima Navigazione Aerea) under the name Umberto Maddalena, later integrated into the Regia Aeronautica. Only 3 examples of this seaplane were built one in Germany and two under license for the Royal Air Force in Italy The plane had very ambitious and advanced features for the time, it was the largest plane in the world and the first to be made of aluminum, the first flight was made on July 12, 1929. It was more like an ocean liner than an airplane, the luxurious interior, lounges, dining room, smoking room, and even a bar It was equipped with 12 tandem-mounted engines, 48-meter wingspan, 40-meter length, 14-person crew, on short routes it carried up to 100 passengers, while on ocean crossings there were about 66 passengers. Between 1930 and 1931 he made a transatlantic demonstration flight starting from Germany and arriving in the U.S. with stops in Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean. In Italy in 1931, it was used for promotional cruises and demonstration flights but was never used on a regular basis because of its high consumption and considerable costs for both operation and maintenance.
