A handsomely bound set of this comprehensive work regarding the history of the United States, written by American historian and politician, George Bancroft. With the bookplate of Sidney A. Kirkman to the front paste down of all volumes. A mixed edition, as is common with this work. Scarce, particularly in such excellent condition. Half titles have been discarded and endpapers renewed. Volume one is the fifth edition of the work, published in 1839. With a frontispiece and one further plate. Volume two is the fourth edition of the work, published in 1838. With a frontispiece. Volume three is the ninth edition of the work, published in 1842. With six plates and three maps, one of which in colour. Volume four is the first edition of the work, published in 1852. With a frontispiece and six battle plans or maps. Volume five is the first edition of the work, published in 1852. Volume six is the first edition of the work, published in 1854. Volume seven is the fourth edition of the work, published in 1860 With a frontispiece. Volume eight is the first edition of the work, published in 1860. With a frontispiece. Volume nine is the first edition of the work, published in 1866. With a frontispiece. Volume ten is the first edition of the work, published in 1874. Considered one of the most influential historians of the nineteenth century, 'History of the United States' was Bancroft's Magnum Opus, published initially between 1834 and 1874. The influential work covers the new nation up to 1789, with the numerous editions published in his lifetime containing many revisions. The work remains one of the most comprehensive histories of colonial America. A handsome set of this important work, difficult to find in such exceptional condition. In half morocco. Externally in excellent condition with just minor rubbing to the extremities slightly heavier to the head of the occasional spine. The odd very light mark to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Coloured pencil annotation to contents page of volume one. Occasional offsetting from plates and the occasional prior owner's pencil annotation, particularly to volume four. Overall: Near Fine
