This short work is described in W, M, G, 116 as a 'memento of Dodgson's affection for the young readers of his masterpiece', and was tipped in to a small number of copies of 'The Hunting of the Snark', and also 'distributed among his young friends'.
'The Hunting of the Snark', subtitled 'an agony in eight fits', is one of Carroll's better known nonsense poems, telling the story of a ship's crew trying to hunt a creature that always vanishes before it can be caught. It has since been adapted to musicals, operas and plays.
