Complete in twenty-one volumes.

A collection of the complete works of George Eliot.
George Eliot was the pseudonym used by the writer Mary Ann Evans. She published under a male name to escape the preconceived ideas about women's fiction during the era, becoming one of the best known Victorian writers. Many believe that her novel 'Middlemarch' is the greatest novel in the English Language.
A leading writer of Victorian England, Eliot's works were celebrated for their realism, psychological insight, and representation of the communities and characters of the provincial countryside.
This set contains:
'Adam Bede', complete in two volumes.
'Scenes of a Clerical Life', complete in two volumes.
'Romola', complete in two volumes.
'Middlemarch', complete in three volumes.
'Daniel Deronda', complete in three volumes.
'The Mill on the Floss', complete in two volumes.
'Felix Holt', complete in two volumes.
And, in a single volume each: 'Essays Etc'; 'Theophrastus Such'; 'Silas Marner Etc.'; 'Legend of Jubal etc'; 'The Spanish Gypsy'.
Bookplate of Andrew Pears of Spring Grove, Isleworth, to the front paste downs. Andrew Pears was the great-grandson of the inventor of Pears soap. Spring Grove was originally the home of famous botanist Sir Joseph Banks, who sailed the world with Captain Cook.
Undated, dated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Aberdeen Libraries.
Condition
In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. A little light rubbing to the leather, including to the head and tail of the spines, a little heavier to 'Adam Bede' Volume II. Spots to the fore edges. A touch of age-toning to the extremities. Spines are a little faded, heavier to 'Silas Marner' and 'Essays'. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Hinges of 'Essays' starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.

An exceptionally bright example of the scarce 1813 twenty-one volume set of the plays of Shakespeare, supplemented with a wealth of comments and critical notices.
The very scarce complete 1813 twenty-one volume edition of the plays of Shakespeare. Referred to as the Reed Edition of 1813, this is also known as Johnson-Steevens-Reed 6, the "sixth edition" by Johnson-Steevens, or the "second variorum edition".
With notes by Samuel Johnson and George Steevens, this edition was revised and augmented by Isaac Reed.

Volume I - Prefatory material and critical analysis by Reed, Richardson, and Malone. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, and four plates.
Volume II - Essays by Farmer, Colman, lists of Editions, lists of Criticism, Commendatory verses, Malones "Attempt to Ascertain the Order of Shakespeare's Plays," Malone's essay on Ford's pamphlet, Steevens's remarks on the same.
