A sought after first impression set in unclipped dust wrappers of Winston Churchill's monumental biography on his ancestor, the Duke of Marlborough, complete with all plates and folding maps. The first edition, first impression. In the original unclipped dust wrappers. Churchill's monumental biography on his ancestor, John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough. Marlborough was the husband of Sarah Churchill, the favourite of Queen Anne. Through this marriage and Sarah's relationship with Anne, Marlborough was risen through the ranks, becoming a Duke and seeing an affluent military career. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, two folding maps, two folding plates, thirty-one plates, and in-text illustrations. Collated, complete. Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, seven folding maps, three folding plates, thirty plates, and in-text illustrations. Collated, complete. Volume III illustrated with a frontispiece, one colour folding map, four folding maps, two folding plates, twenty-three plates, and in-text illustrations. Collated, complete. Volume IV illustrated with a frontispiece, three folding maps, twenty-four plates, and in-text illustrations. Collated, complete. Written by Marlborough's descendent, the eminent Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Condition In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, smart. A touch of fading to the spines and extremities, heavier to the tail of the spine of Volume III. Very light bumping to the extremities. A few very light marks to the cloth. Spots to the fore edges and endpapers. Front hinge of Volume I is starting but firm. Dust wrappers are a little edge worn, with chips and closed tears, a larger amount of loss to the tail of the spine of Volume III, and to the rear wrap of Volume IV. Spines are age-toned and rubbed. Light handling marks to the wraps. Faint tidemark to the tail of the spine to the reverse of Volume IV. Repairs to the reverse of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Overall: Near Fine
