About the Item
A lovely first impression copy of Shel Silverstein's important and influential children's novel, illustrated by Silverstein throughout, in an early impression dust wrapper.
The first edition, first impression of this work, with the four line colophon to the copyright page. The dust wrapper is not the first issue dust wrapper, with the price $2.95 and not $2.50. Thus the dust wrapper is an early issue, possibly the second.
In the original clipped dust wrapper, however the price is not clipped.
'The Giving Tree' is a classic American children's fantasy picture book, following the relationship of an apple tree and a young boy who grows into adulthood.
Though it was popular when published, this work also garnered a lot of controversy, with people debating whether the relationship between the boy and tree is positive or abusive. There are many different interpretations of the work from the points of view of religion, the environment, mother-child relationships, and friendships.
Written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein, complete with illustrations throughout.
In the original publisher's paper covered boards, in the original clipped dust wrapper. Externally, smart, with a touch of discolouration to the extremities. A few very light marks to the boards. Dust wrapper is a little edge worn with a few small closed tears. A touch of sunning and light marks to the wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Prior owner's ink inscription to the half title.

[Younger & Hirsch 7; Greenaway 95]
Dr. Seuss was challenged by Houghton Mifflin's Education Division director, William Ellsworth Spaulding, to create a book for young children using the 225 essential words for beginning readers, a book they would not want to put down. Seuss used 223 of the words from the list, plus 13 others. Seuss tricked kids into enjoying learning with his destructive and charismatic house guest. "Parents," notes biographer Brian Jay Jones, "were more than happy to join Dr. Seuss as fellow revolutionaries. Even if parents didn't necessarily understand the pedagogy, it was easy to see the difference between the staid DICK AND JANE...
