Adam Fuss: Mask by Adam Fuss and Peter Lamborn Wilson. Published by Baldwin Gallery, 2005. 1st Ed hardcover with slipcase exhibition catalog. The photograms are produced by placing african masks directly on the photographic paper, and manipulating shadow using various light sources in and around the mask to create the desired effect. The book was limited to an edition of 1000 copies. The Baldwin Gallery presented the new photographs by acclaimed contemporary artist Adam Fuss, whose latest series explores the rich iconography of African masks. Selecting particular masks for their unique designs and stark contrast between light and dark, the artist makes photograms directly from the objects. He captures the ghost-like, magical qualities of African masquerade, with its implications of ritual performance, hidden identity, and transformation.
