American Primitive painting by Jean Lipman. New York: Oxford University Press, 1945. Hardcover with no dust jacket. 157 pp. One of the first source books on American Primitive painting. This type of painting flourished in the first three quarters of the 19th century. The art form came from Craft rather than painter's traditions making it individual, unpretentious and most often anonymous. The book breaks down the art into four categories, portraits, landscapes, ladies work, and wall decoration. It is illustrated in both color and black and white. NPT Books, a division of N.P.
