Art Pottery of America by Lucile Henske. Exton: Schiffer Publishing Limited, 1982. First edition hardcover with dust jacket. 368 pp. A study of American art pottery produced from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is arranged alphabetically by the potteries all with important historical data, photographs of each pottery's representative forms, and a complete series of the identifying marks. Prior to 1870 most of the art pottery was imported from Europe and the Orient. Art pottery as a popular form began in America in 1876 with the World's Fair in Philadelphia. Artisans who were already experimenting with native clays attended the fair were inspired by the displays shown by the French and Japanese. NPT Books, a division of N.P. Trent Antiques, has a large collection of used and out of print books on art, architecture, decoration and antiques with a focus on 1st editions, signed and limited editions.
