About the Item

Published by Jonathan Cape, 1st edition, London, 2004. Hardback with English text. A wonderful association city inscribed by Mike Leigh to Jim Broadbent from their time together working on Vera Drake, in small writing on the front free grey endpaper “Jim - With love and thanks….Untitled 03/VeraDrake April 04. Bill Brandt, the greatest of British photographers, who visually defined the English identity in the mid-twentieth century, was an enigma. Indeed, despite his assertions to the contrary, he was not, in fact, English at all. His life, like much of his work, was an elaborate construction. England was his adopted homeland, and the English were his chosen subjects. The England in which Brandt arrived in the Thirties was deeply polarized. He photographed both upstairs and downstairs, and recorded the industrial north as well as the society rounds of the affluent south. Paul Strand: Photograph 1915-1945 - Nancy Newhall - 1st edition, 1945
Located in CA, CA
Published by the Museum of Modern Art, 1st edition, New York, 1945. Hardback, English text. This exhibition catalogue is the first critical monograph issued by MoMA on a photographer. It was published in conjunction with a planned series of one-man focal retrospectives to bring some of the prominent American and European photographers to the fore, and photography has since then entered the category of fine art as far as MoMA is concerned. A catalyst and legend among his peers and the photography world at large, Strand’s revelatory photography captures a subtle change of mood, a slipt-second thought; his ‘nature morta’ of a kitchen bowl...
