About the Item
A Biography of William Wordsworth by Edwin Paxton Hood. London: W.
F.G. Cash, 1856. Calf and cloth bound hardcover with gilt edge. 508 pp. William Wordsworth (1770-1850) was a major English Romantic poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped to launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their joint publication Lyrical Ballads (1798). William Wordsworth was born in what is now named Wordsworth House in Cockermouth, Cumberland, England which is part of the scenic region in northwestern England known as the Lake District. His sister, the poet and diarist Dorothy Wordsworth, to whom he was close all his life, was born the following year, and the two were baptised together. In 1793 William first publication his poems in the collections "An Evening Walk and Descriptive Sketches." In 1795 he received a legacy of 900 pounds from Raisley Calvert and became able to pursue a career as a poet.
